A LOOK BACK AT MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin 2015
During the second MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin, 150 participants engaged in vibrant discussions over the course of 49 sessions. Highlight guests included Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings and political-activist group Pussy Riot. Speaking to nearly 2,000 listeners, Hastings described his vision for the future of digital entertainment and outlined planned Netflix activities for Germany, Europe, and the rest of the world.
In the second MEDIA Convention Berlin, 150 participants discussed trends, strategies, revenue models, and media policy over the course of 49 sessions. Playing out across three stages, the event was hosted by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg in cooperation with Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb) and re:publica.
The diversity of speakers reflected the ongoing change in the media industry: Media Convention assembled personalities as varied as Netflix founder Reed Hastings, ARD Chairman Lutz Marmor, the political and media activists from Pussy Riot, YouTube Star LeFloid, Springer executive Christoph Keese, blogger Stefan Niggemeier, Parliamentary State Secretary Brigitte Zypries, investigative journalist Günter Wallraff, sociologist Prof. Dr. Harald Welzer, Sky Deutschland CEO Marcus Ammon, and actress Meret Becker.
Netflix boss Reed Hastings’ appearance was a particular highlight. Speaking to an audience of nearly 2,000 listeners, he described his vision for the future of digital entertainment and his plans for Netflix activities in Germany, Europe, and the broader world.
In other MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin sessions, the topic was nothing less than the future of video itself. Participants discussed the video strategies being pursued by the major online players, how to make money on YouTube, how the TV and print businesses are converging online, and the thorny regulatory questions posed by new media platforms.
As a part of the “Your Turn” Video Creator Competition, cash prizes worth a total of €70,000 were awarded to six winners. They’ll also receive the opportunity to participate in workshops at the newly opened YouTube Space Berlin, and will be able to use cameras, editing suites, and a green-screen set for their own video productions. Your Turn is the first publicly and privately funded network-independent YouTube competition in Germany. It was organised by Endemol beyond, sponsored by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, and supported by YouTube.
On both evenings, the conference doors were opened freely to the public. The first evening, TV series fans were treated to a viewing of the first episode of the fifth season of “Game of Thrones”, while on the second, gamers were given a chance to see a live Let’s-Play session.
Finally, in MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin’s exhibition space, visitors were able to test innovative new TV, web, transmedia, mobile and games technologies – from virtual reality and branded-video publishing to automated animation and the future of gaming.
