Snapchat, Instagram, Vine, and YouTube. For youth, does media beyond the smartphone matter? 17.30 - 17.50
Communication, gaming, and the production and consumption of photos and videos are for many young people the focus of their media consumption. A number of apps dominate this field: Instagram, Twitter, Vine, Facebook and YouTube unify young people the way the linear programming on MTV and Viva once did. Everything is consumed in these apps, from news to the most comprehensive tutorials.
Franziska von Kempis illustrates young people’s media consumption habits both inside and outside the popular apps.

Elusive youth. Are they seeking their own programming, or is the market failing? 17.50 - 18.30
The massive influx of U.S.-dominated Internet platforms that entertain and inform young people with their apps demonstrates that youth know how to help themselves. For many of this generation, YouTube is becoming a replacement to television. But while niches such as gaming and comedy are being successfully filled, it is difficult to produce and fund original news videos, documentary content and niche content for YouTube on an ongoing basis. The youth content offerings from ARD and ZDF are now seeking to remedy this market failure. To this end, young viewers must be provided with (TV) content that hasn’t previously been available online, a balancing act between ambition and reach.
