The pope is on Instagram. After three days and just six posts, @franciscus already had 1.5 million followers. Jerome Boateng had nearly twice as many, but he also got advice from @Beyonce’s husband. Whether it’s the church or football, authentic pictures direct from life are no longer a minor-league gig. Snapchat, vlogs, follow-me-arounds: everybody stages themselves, right? Online figures demonstrate just how much work goes into producing authenticity.
